Sometimes the engine does not start or loses speed or suspicious warning lights come on. What you should do is to take your car as soon as possible to a good good workshop specialized in electromechanics, because most probably the faults come from the ECU or control unit. How do you know if the ECU or control unit is faulty?
Suspicious behavior – how to tell if the control unit is faulty
The power unit is the brain of the vehicle. Also called ECU or engine control module, it is a computer in charge of supervising and regulating the vehicle’s control systems: from the electrical circuit, combustion, transmission and battery. Like any other part of the vehicle, it can break down, but if the ECU fails, the problem must be dealt with as soon as possible, as it can seriously damage the engine.
These are some of the symptoms of a fault in the engine ECU:
- Lack of power, difficulty accelerating.
- Excess consumption.
- Malfunctions at idling speed.
- Dense, dark smoke comes out of the exhaust pipe.
- The glow plug light comes on.
- The engine fault light comes on.
- The engine does not start, or starts with difficulty.
- The vehicle stops.
- Small detonations are produced in the motor from time to time.
In addition to the engine ECU, the vehicle incorporates other electronic modules that function as a control computer over various parts of the vehicle. For example, symptoms of failure in a comfort or passenger compartment module could be:
- The windshield wiper does not work or works erratically.
- Interior lights do not turn off or do not turn on.
- Doors do not close, or do not close the first time.
